We’ve all heard about the potential of “green” hydrogen — hydrogen produced from carbon-free sources — to help decarbonize the ways we use energy by making variable renewable power from wind and solar available on-demand. The European Union is counting on green hydrogen to meet its carbon reduction goals under the Paris Agreement.

On Friday 9 July, Siemens held a ceremony to commemorate the start of construction at its Wunsiedel green hydrogen plant, a facility which will produce 1,350 tons of hydrogen annually from renewable energy. The plant, which is scheduled to begin operation in the summer of 2022, aims to offset carbon dioxide production by 13,500 tons per year.
Ørsted has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Oklahoma-based natural gas operator Williams to explore the potential for developing power-to-X projects in the US. Under the MOU, the partners aim to combine Ørsted’s renewables and hydrogen expertise with Williams’ natural gas infrastructure and processing experience to co-develop hydrogen or synthetic natural gas facilities powered by renewable energy.

Plans have been unveiled for what is believed to be the largest green hydrogen facility on the west coast of the US. Plug Power on Monday (20th September) said it is behind the development which will produce 30 metric tonnes of liquid green hydrogen daily in Fresno Country, California. In order to produce the hydrogen, a new 300MW zero-carbon solar farm will be implemented to power 120MW of Plug Power’s PEM electrolysers.
Ineos plans to produce and use low-carbon hydrogen at its Grangemouth refinery and petrochemical plant in Scotland, in combination with the Acorn carbon capture and storage facility, as it seeks to reduce its CO2 emissions, the company said Sept. 22.
