The American Petroleum Institute (API) announced the publication of API Recommended Practice 1192 (RP 1192), Transportation of Carbon Dioxide by Pipeline. This first edition standard provides performance requirements for the safe and reliable transport of carbon dioxide (CO2) by pipeline. It also addresses the design, construction, operation, and management of CO2 pipelines.
Carbon dioxide pipelines are an increasingly important part of the nation’s pipeline infrastructure as companies explore new systems and consider repurposing existing assets to transport CO2 for long-term storage or enhanced oil recovery. These pipelines are already subject to a robust federal hazardous liquid regulatory program that helps ensure the safe and reliable transportation of CO2. RP 1192 incorporates additional guidance that addresses the unique considerations associated with operating CO2 pipelines, such as for CO2 streams, which have properties and behaviors distinct from traditional petroleum liquid products.

To address these differences and provide a consistent approach for the safe design, construction, operation, and maintenance of CO2 pipelines, API convened a wide range of subject matter experts to develop RP 1192. While the focus of RP 1192 is transportation of CO2 in the supercritical and liquid phases, it also includes transportation of gas phase CO2.
RP 1192 focuses on system components and operations impacting performance and integrity including operating pressure ranges, ductile fracture control, pressure fluctuations, corrosion considerations, and non-metallic component interactions. Additionally, the document provides guidance on repurposing existing assets for CO2 service and considerations for emergency response planning for CO2.
“API Recommended Practice 1192 provides operators with structured guidance to manage the unique characteristics of CO2 pipeline systems,” said Anchal Liddar, Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services at API. “By consolidating technical knowledge into a single document, it supports the safe, reliable operation of CO2 pipeline systems and advances API’s ongoing commitment to safety and innovation.”
By addressing CO2’s distinct properties and operational considerations, RP 1192 provides clear and consistent direction to support industry planning as interest in CO2 transportation infrastructure continues to grow.
The American Petroleum Institute represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry, supporting nearly 11 million U.S. jobs. With approximately 600 members, API companies produce, process, and distribute the majority of the nation’s energy. Founded in 1919, API has developed over 800 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
