California's Emissions Credit Prices Jump in Q1'22
Inside this issue
The first auction of California emissions credits in 2012 was near $10 per metric ton of CO2e. Each year, the clearing price and the reserve price for the cap-and-trade auction have stayed closely aligned. Except this year.
In Q1 2022, the clearing price reached $29.15 per ton of CO2e, significantly higher than the reserve price of near $20. As the annual emission caps continue to decline in the coming years, companies that are the source of emissions in the state of California may be expected to pay a premium for emissions.
