Data + Emissions + Accelerator

Earlier this month, Bloomberg and Carbon Mapper announced the Carbon Mapper Accelerator to tackle methane and reduce emissions globally.

According to the release, the new Carbon Mapper Accelerator will:

  1. Immediately expand airborne mapping of methane super-emitters across the Americas, Europe, and Africa — providing timely, open-source data that can inform climate policy and action in advance of the 2023 deployment of the satellite constellation.

The discussion of super-emitters continues to evolve. Individual facilities and corporations are tackling this challenge with aerial and sensor solutions to reduce emissions. At first glance, this could be similar to ClimateSCAPE with different players involved. However, the deployment of satellite constellation along with the Planet partnership may create an opportunity to differentiate the Carbon Mapper Accelerator from other open data emissions programs.

  1. Provide policymakers, agencies, businesses, and civil society with early access to Carbon Mapper’s open source data, advancing the deployment of Carbon Mapper’s open online data portal on carbonmapper.org — including initial airborne data products starting in Fall 2021, expanded capabilities for the full satellite data portal by 2023, and expert support for users.

Every organization, public or private, should be data-informed. Carbon Mapper's open source data initiative will improve transparency and provide expert support. Anyone that has wrangled satellite imagery knows the numerous challenges of making the interface clear and understandable from both a data and user experience perspective. Open does not always mean free. A "full satellite data portal" is also ambiguous at this point until the company unveils more of the product.

  1. Develop and test new cutting-edge remote-sensing technology, including advanced land and ocean data products that can support climate adaptation and conservation efforts as well as satellite data fusion with coordinated high-resolution imaging by Planet’s SkySat established constellation.

Now, this is where it gets exciting! The "data fusion" with Planet's SkySat enables site specific monitoring solutions that are needed for many types of facilities. Low-resolution and high-frequency satellite monitoring combined with high-resolution imagery enables many unique solutions for asset operations across energy segments.

Energy Accelerators to Watch

Cleantech Open's annual Global Forum is this week (October 20-22). It is free to attend with many different speakers, workshops, and company showcases.

Katapult.vc has an Ocean and Climate accelerator based out of Norway. The Climate accelerator is open and accepting applications. The firm is accepting applications from global startups.

Avatar Innovations is Canada's first CarbonTech accelerator located in Calgary. The accelerator recently announced 10 finalists for the 12-week program to support their entry into the $100 million Carbon Removal XPRIZE.

Rice Alliance Clean Energy Accelerator was launched in June 2021 and is supported by many large energy companies and energy finance firms.

Carbon to Value Initiative is a multi-year collaboration to acclerate the carbontech industry. The initiative is fueled by Urban Future Lab, Greentown Labs, and Franhoffer USA.

Greentown Labs is located in Boston, Massachusets and Houston, Texas and is one of the largest cleantech incubators in North America. Greentown Labs has a regional summit in November.

Joules Accelerator connects cleantech startups to pilot and commercialization opportunities. Cohort 9 applications due October 29th.

Shell Gamechanger Accelerator has an open form for sharing your solution with Shell GameChanger to access funding, coaching, and markets.

Innovation Incubator "IN2" by Wells Fargo has open referrals now through the end of 2021 with company selection happening in January 2022.
