Inside this issue

Battery wars are heating up. Elon Musk poked Apple commenting "Apple uses I think almost 100% cobalt in their batteries in cellphones and laptops." Supply chains will continue to develop outside of China; however, near term demand will be met almost entirely by China.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) produces more than 60% of the worldโ€™s mined cobalt. According to OECD.org, 8 of the 14 largest cobalt mines are Chinese-owned.

The global energy service companies are making moves too. Olivier Le Peuch, CEO of Schlumberger reminded investors during the Q2'21 earnings call:

And in new energy, we continued to progress all of our ventures, including the recently announced strategic collaboration with Panasonic North America to develop our new battery-grade lithium production process in Clayton Valley, Nevada.

SLB and Panasonic aim to bring a new production process for lithium batteries that is more sustainable and cuts the total time from over a year to just a few weeks.
