Bosch Commissions Its First In-House Electrolyzer With Hybrion Electrolysis Stacks

Published by Todd Bush on November 13, 2025

Press Release — November 13, 2025

Bosch Group has inaugurated its hydrogen landscape at the Bamberg plant as two in-house Hybrion PEM electrolysis stacks enter real operation, producing hydrogen at scale.

  • 2.5-megawatt electrolyzer produces up to 1 metric ton of hydrogen daily
  • Hydrogen landscape at Bamberg showcases Bosch systems across the H2 value chain
  • Markus Heyn: "The official start of operations for our electrolyzer and the opening of the hydrogen landscape mark an important milestone for us."

Hydrogen is advancing at Bosch: after launching Hybrion PEM electrolysis stacks in March, Bosch has now put two into operation at its Bamberg site. With a total output of 2.5 megawatts, the electrolyzer converts water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity and meets EU requirements for renewable hydrogen. The new hydrogen landscape demonstrates multiple hydrogen production, storage, and application pathways.

At the heart of the electrolyzer, built by FEST in Goslar, Germany, are two Bosch Hybrion electrolysis stacks manufactured in Bamberg. Each delivers 1.25 megawatts and produces around 23 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. At full load, the electrolyzer produces over 1 metric ton of hydrogen daily—enough fuel for an electric 40-ton truck fitted with a Bosch fuel-cell power module (FCPM) to travel up to 14,000 kilometers.

A Bosch FCPM, equipped with a Bosch fuel-cell stack, operates continuously inside a lifetime container to test durability. Hydrogen produced on-site flows directly to the FCPM via pipeline. The electricity produced by the FCPM feeds back into the electrolyzer for testing and hydrogen generation. Large-scale production of the FCPM began at Bosch’s Stuttgart-Feuerbach plant in mid-2023 and was recently nominated for the German President’s Future Prize.

Bosch also operates a second test station for Hybrion PEM electrolysis stacks at the Bamberg plant to verify performance and efficiency under real operating conditions. Each Hybrion stack undergoes activation before shipment to ensure immediate operational readiness. A 21-meter hydrogen tank stores hydrogen produced by electrolysis at pressures up to 50 bar.

Bosch reached its first electrolysis milestones in 2025. Deliveries have begun to various customers and partners, including Kyros Hydrogen Solutions, Neumann & Esser, Pietro Fiorentini, and its subsidiary Hyter.
