A major step has been achieved in Europe’s offshore carbon transport initiative as Greensand Future confirmed that Carbon Destroyer 1 has entered dry dock at the port of Delfzijl in the Netherlands. The vessel, recognized as the first dedicated offshore CO₂ carrier built within the EU, is now moving into the critical outfitting phase of its construction.

The docking operation, carried out last week, proceeded smoothly and according to plan, marking another milestone for the project. Engineers have since completed the installation of retractable thrusters designed to give the ship precise control during CO₂ transfer operations at offshore storage sites. These thrusters are essential for maintaining stability during connection and disconnection phases in challenging North Sea conditions.
Working alongside Royal Wagenborg, Greensand Future is developing an integrated maritime infrastructure aimed at enabling large-scale CO₂ transport and permanent storage beneath the Danish North Sea. The initiative forms part of the wider European effort to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, viewed as a cornerstone for meeting regional climate goals.
For the maritime and logistics sectors, the vessel’s progress highlights a growing link between traditional shipping expertise and emerging environmental technologies. The Carbon Destroyer 1 project is seen as a practical demonstration of how established shipping practices can adapt to support industrial decarbonization.
The ship’s dry dock phase will include final system installations and sea trials preparation before delivery. Once operational, the carrier will play a pivotal role in transporting captured CO₂ from industrial emitters to offshore storage facilities, turning the North Sea into one of Europe’s key hubs for carbon sequestration.
