Job Description

Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction & mining equipment, diesel engines, and industrial gas turbines. With over 10,000 engineers worldwide, Caterpillar has been developing class-leading machines and engines for decades. We have an exciting opportunity for a Combustion Simulation Engineer/ Low C Fuels. The Energy & Transportation Technology (E&TT) team is part of Caterpillar’s Integrated Components & Solutions Division (ICS), which has global responsibility for advancing technologies to support future product needs. Many exciting hardware and software technologies are being identified, researched, and developed for future powertrains for off-road machines, including approaches for increased power density, high-efficiency hybrid powertrains, alternative (low-Carbon-intensity) fuels, waste heat recovery, energy management, electronics and controls, advanced power sources, dual-fuel engines, and ultra-low exhaust emission technologies. For the highly-transient, high power requirements of heavy-duty off-road applications, a spectrum of low-to-zero Carbon solutions will be needed for the future. These applications provide a significant de-carbonization challenge, and talented, innovative engineers are required to deliver customer-focused solutions.

Job Duties:

  • The successful candidate will have the technical skills, initiative, and communication skills necessary to execute and deliver on simulation technology development projects in the energy and power systems space.
  • Create 3D CFD models to simulate both liquid and gaseous fuel injection, mixing, and combustion in internal combustion engines
  • Compare/validate combustion simulation results to both physical engine test data as well as fundamental combustion experimental data
  • Propose, research, implement and test new submodels for improved prediction of engine performance and emissions from 3D Combustion Simulation tools.
  • Report simulation results and make recommendations to improve engine performance or resolve issues.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • 6 years of combustion simulation (3D CFD) experience.

Top Candidate will also have:

  • Expertise in CFD submodel development, implementation, and validation – spray, combustion, heat transfer, turbulence, etc.
  • Deep fundamental knowledge/understanding of combustion and spray physics.
  • Proficiency with the CONVERGE software tool – applied to analyze and optimize engine combustion systems.
  • Experience with modeling combustion of low-Carbon/zero-Carbon fuels.
  • Expertise with the application of 1D simulation tools for the specification of 3D CFD boundary conditions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Primary authorship on at least two peer-reviewed journal publications.
