This industry-first framework establishes a rigorous approach for measuring, monitoring, reporting, and verifying a novel form of carbon removal, which combines biogenic methane production with permanent CO2 sequestration in geologic formations utilizing legacy energy infrastructure.
The BiCRS+RNG methodology introduces a verifiable pathway to high-integrity carbon removal crediting, ensuring that carbon removal projects meet the highest industry standards.
Built on CCF’s proprietary process, the methodology enables: injection of biomass-derived feedstocks into geologic formations to support microbial conversion to CO2 and biomethane.
It also enables production of biomethane at the surface to be delivered to end users as a clean, low-carbon renewable natural gas (RNG).
Additionally, it brings permanent sequestration of CO2 within the formation through a durable adsorption process, creating long-term and scalable geologic carbon storage.
This carbon removal approach unlocks new opportunities for climate-conscious industries to support decarbonization efforts while leveraging existing energy infrastructure for low-carbon fuel production.
EcoEngineers (Eco), a clean energy consulting, auditing, and advisory firm recently acquired by leading global assurance partner LRQA, collaborated with CCF in the development of this methodology.
Eco helped CCF ensure that the BiCRS+RNG methodology adheres to the highest standards of scientific rigor, transparency, and sustainability, ensuring projects developed using this approach will be in compliance with international standard ISO 14064-2:2019.
This framework provides RNG buyers, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credit purchasers, investors, and project developers with a proven and market-ready solution for addressing climate goals.
Ryan Waddington, chairman and CEO of Cowboy Clean Fuels, said: "The completion of the BiCRS+RNG methodology represents a major milestone in the evolution of engineered carbon removal and renewable energy production. This methodology enables shovel-ready projects to move forward with confidence, allowing our capital partners to invest with certainty in the Powder River Basin and beyond."
Cowboy Clean Fuels is a pioneering energy company focused on developing innovative renewable energy and carbon removal solutions. With a commitment to sustainability and leveraging legacy infrastructure, Cowboy Clean Fuels is at the forefront of engineered carbon removal technologies.
