Deep Sky, the Canadian carbon removal project developer, has completed construction of Deep Sky Alpha, the world's first carbon removal innovation and commercialization centre. Located in Innisfail, Alberta, the facility progressed from land lease signing to construction completion in less than 12 months, demonstrating unprecedented speed in carbon removal infrastructure development. Multiple DAC units on site are now being commissioned, with carbon removal operations set to begin this summer and the first tonnes of CO2 removed by the end of the year.
"Today marks a pivotal moment for the carbon removal industry," said Alex Petre, Deep Sky’s CEO. "Completing construction of Deep Sky Alpha in under a year proves that we can build critical climate infrastructure at the pace and scale required by the climate crisis."

The milestone comes one year after Deep Sky signed the lease for the Innisfail site. Deep Sky Alpha has achieved “Mechanical Completion” – a critical phase of the construction process for large infrastructure that signifies that all major equipment and systems have been installed according to engineering specifications. At Alpha, this includes development and building permits, civil construction, electrical interconnection and site energization, procurement of over 90 packages, and electrical and mechanical installation of all required systems, including the process building, CO2 storage system, and the compressed air and water distribution systems.
Commissioning of individual DAC technologies is now underway, with the facility on track to begin operations this summer. Deep Sky Alpha will generate its first verified carbon removal credits by year-end.
The facility will deploy up to 10 different DAC technologies simultaneously, with multiple world-class providers. This unprecedented collaboration allows for real-world testing and optimization of multiple technologies under identical conditions, accelerating the industry's path to cost-effective, scalable carbon removal.
Deep Sky Alpha's strategic location in Innisfail provides access to renewable power and proximity to permanent geological storage. The facility will capture 3,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with capacity for 30,000 tonnes over its initial 10-year operating period.
The project has generated more than 110 construction jobs and will employ approximately 15 full-time operators.
Engineering and design work was completed in partnership with BBA, a leading engineering firm specializing in energy transition projects. The achievement builds on Deep Sky's recent $40 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and carbon removal credit purchase agreements with founding buyers Microsoft, Royal Bank of Canada, and Rubicon Carbon.
Montreal-based Deep Sky is the world's first tech-agnostic carbon removal project developer aiming to remove gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere and permanently store it underground. As a project developer, Deep Sky brings together the most promising direct air and ocean carbon capture companies under one roof to deliver the largest supply of high-quality carbon credits to the market. Deep Sky is backed by investors including Investissement Québec, Brightspark Ventures, Whitecap Venture Partners, OMERS Ventures, BDC Climate Fund, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, BMO, National Bank of Canada, and more.
