Job Overview

The Director of Program Management is ultimately responsible for the smooth operation of the R&D program and are always concerned with how to move quicker, cheaper, while adequately considering and effectively communicating risks and uncertainties.

The Director of R&D Program Management define and enforce project management processes across the R&D program. They will assist Project Managers in all aspects of project management and help negotiate resources between projects as well as translate and help define higher-level priorities for the R&D program. This position is responsible for overseeing the overall program schedule and budget, which includes all individual projects as well as the ongoing research efforts within the R&D wing of the company.

In addition to being in-charge of project and program management, the Director of R&D Program Management will need to have a deep understanding of the technology, engineering, and science being pursued in the R&D departments. This means staying up to date with all technical developments across the entire department.

The Director of R&D Program Management must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to organize and direct individual contributors; to enable them to be at their most effective. This position has a large responsibility to ensure that all the team members understand how to work together and coordinate their efforts to achieving the ultimate goals of the department; keeping an eye out for any potential issue that may arise, internally or externally.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Required

  • 8+ years of experience managing complex R&D projects.
  • This role requires a highly resourceful and motivated individual who manages complexity well and works well under pressure.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills and has a good understanding of interpersonal dynamics.
  • Ability to lead and influence people who are not direct reports.
  • Bachelor’s degree or beyond in a highly technical or scientific discipline.
  • Good time-management and organizational ability.

Preferred

  • Strong knowledge base in formal project management methodologies and philosophies with an emphasis on quantitative risk assessment and earned value management.
  • Experience leading the development of a technology from TRL 1 to TRL 9
  • Experience working on industrial or power systems
  • Knowledge of carbon capture technologies

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring successful completion of R&D projects on time and on budget.
  • Managing the department-wide R&D program schedule and budget.
  • Collating and reviewing schedule and budget information from other project managers.
  • Ensuring alignment of project timelines and budgets with the overall company goals and objectives.
  • Creating and maintaining tools, methodologies, methods of organization, etc. for the management of the R&D program.
  • Creating and maintaining effective team communication and dynamics within the R&D department.
  • Performing analyses to determine the Project Management efficacy, reporting results, suggesting improvements in strategy and methodology.
  • Assisting project managers on specific projects.
  • People management of direct reports.
  • Helping determine hiring priorities and assisting with hiring.
  • Properly analyzing and effectively communicating to management the tradeoffs between Cost, Schedule, Scope, Quality, and Risk.

General Requirements and Job Details:

  • Must be able to work at a computer for at least eight hours per day
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • This position is based out of our Arvada, Colorado offices
  • Intermittent travel may be required to project sites
  • This Exempt position has a standard schedule of Monday through Friday and is Full-Time.
  • This is a salaried position so there may be times when a non-standard schedule is required.
  • The salary range is 140,000 to 170,000 commensurate with experience
  • We are open to individuals who are at a Senior Director level
