Econetix, a Vienna-based carbon asset manager focused on high-integrity carbon projects, has announced the addition of a new biochar and bamboo carbon removal project to its growing portfolio. Developed in partnership with Vietnamese firm EcoNations, the project is set in Khánh Hòa Province in central Vietnam and marks a significant step in scaling engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in Southeast Asia.
The project centers on a 240-hectare bamboo plantation paired with a 40-tonne-per-day continuous pyrolysis facility. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce 12,000 metric tonnes of biochar annually, generating approximately 30,000 Puro.earth Carbon Removal Certificates (CORCs) per year. Each CORC represents one tonne of CO₂ permanently removed, with a projected storage permanence of over 100 years through soil application of biochar.

During the project's first four years, the pyrolysis facility will use FSC-certified acacia and eucalyptus biomass sourced from more than 16,000 hectares of accredited suppliers within a 50-kilometer radius. This approach eliminates early-stage supply risk while the bamboo plantation matures.
From Year 5, the project transitions to its own bamboo crop as the primary feedstock, with the plantation reaching its first harvest. By Year 6, the project is projected to achieve roughly 74% self-sufficiency in feedstock supply, cutting annual sourcing costs from approximately $3.8 million to $1.5 million. The 20-year crediting period runs from 2028 to 2048, with first CORC issuance targeted for the first half of 2028.
The project uses Econetix's proprietary digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) platform, which has already been deployed across more than 15 carbon projects globally. The platform replaces manual sampling with continuous, auditable data streams covering feedstock sourcing, pyrolysis parameters, and GPS-tagged biochar end-use application, providing robust impact accounting for every CORC issued.
CDR from the project is generated in alignment with Puro.earth's Puro Standard Biochar methodology, one of the leading frameworks for verifying engineered carbon removal through biochar. Over the full project lifetime, the initiative is expected to remove 600,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
Beyond carbon removal, the project is designed to deliver measurable co-benefits for the local community and landscape. It is expected to create 28 direct jobs in facility operations and project management, along with additional indirect employment tied to bamboo plantation and harvesting work. Biochar applied to agricultural land improves soil water retention and nutrient binding, directly benefiting Vietnamese farmers in the region.
The project is structured under a VIFC Da Nang special purpose vehicle, which provides significant tax benefits over the project's 20-year lifetime. It is also designed to contribute to at least five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, decent work, life on land, responsible consumption, and zero hunger.
In its ramp-up year of 2028, the project is projected to generate 18,000 CORCs at 60% operational capacity. From 2029 onward, it targets full annual production of 30,000 CORCs, reaching a five-year cumulative total of 138,000 tonnes of CO₂ removed. The dual revenue model, combining CORC sales with biochar soil amendment sales, positions the project to generate income streams across both carbon and agricultural markets.
