Freepoint signs definitive agreements for $450M+ first purchase option on biomethanol and other liquid fuels over a seven-year period, and provides direct project capital to Emvolon for future global deployment
WOBURN, Mass. and STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Emvolon, Inc. (Emvolon), an MIT-spinout commercializing technology that converts methane-rich waste gases into high-value liquid fuels, and Freepoint Commodities LLC (Freepoint), a leading global physical commodity merchant, today announced the execution of two definitive commercial agreements. The transaction establishes Freepoint as both the anchor off-taker and a cornerstone project capital partner across Emvolon’s global deployment pipeline.
Under a seven-year Commodity Purchase Framework Agreement, Freepoint will serve as the primary buyer for biomethanol and associated liquid fuels produced across Emvolon’s deployment sites. Production volumes are structured to scale toward 300,000 metric tons annually as Emvolon’s portfolio expands, delivering commercial-scale fuel directly into Freepoint’s global physical distribution network.

In a concurrent financial agreement, Freepoint has secured direct co-investment participation rights to deploy equity and debt capital across Emvolon’s project portfolio and clean energy infrastructure assets. This balance-sheet backing bridges the gap between technology deployment and long-term project debt financing, providing waste asset operators, such as landfills, dairy farms, and industrial gas sites with a fully de-risked, turnkey fuel production solution.
"Energy security and supply chain resilience and sustainability dictate that we produce essential liquid fuels locally using domestic waste resources that are currently flared or lost," said Emmanuel Kasseris, Ph.D., Co-Founder and CEO of Emvolon. "This dual commercial and capital agreement with Freepoint systematically solves the core bottleneck in decentralized fuel manufacturing by securing our buyer and anchoring our project financing platform. We are building our first commercial system now and will put that foundation to work across North America and key international growth regions."
Rather than operating as a passive technology licensor, Emvolon delivers a turnkey "Liquid Fuels-as-a-Service" platform that systematically eliminates execution risk for waste gas site owners. Emvolon’s commercial template aligns three essential pillars:
Site & Feedstock Development: Partnering with premier waste operators to secure stranded methane streams, as demonstrated by Emvolon's joint venture with Montauk Renewables.
Modular Conversion Technology: Deploying modular micro-reactors that repurpose mass-produced automotive engines to convert waste gas directly into liquid fuels on-site, bypassing grid and pipeline constraints.
Offtake, Logistics & Capital: Partnering with Freepoint to ensure product offtake, manage global distribution, and provide balance-sheet capital at the individual project level.
This standardized, plug-and-play template enables Emvolon to flexibly replicate projects across target regions, including landfill, agricultural, and industrial gas resource bases in North America and other regions, without custom engineering delays or regional infrastructure bottlenecks.
"Freepoint is focused on building resilient commodity supply chains and identifying proprietary technologies capable of scaling rapidly to meet physical supply deficits," said Mark Lay, Managing Director at Freepoint. "Emvolon’s modular deployment model offers a practical solution to localized fuel production. Our dual commercial and capital commitment reflects our commitment to renewable chemicals and fuels."
Methanol represents a $40 billion annual and rapidly-growing global market with diversified commercial applications across maritime shipping, heavy transport, specialty chemicals, and newly approved Methanol-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production pathways. Driven by global supply deficits for cost-competitive low-carbon fuels, RED-II-compliant biomethanol is trading at a premium exceeding $1,000 per metric ton. By producing low-cost liquid commodities directly at emission sites, Emvolon's modular economics deliver attractive commercial margins independent of shifting policy environments.
Founded in 2011, Freepoint is based in Stamford, Connecticut, and employs more than 600 people worldwide. The company is a global merchant of physical commodities, providing customers with physical supply and logistics chain management and services, along with environmentally friendly products and solutions. www.freepoint.com
Emvolon, Inc. is an MIT-spinout cleantech company founded in 2021 and headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts. Emvolon’s patented technology platform converts waste gases from landfills, dairies, wastewater treatment facilities, and industrial flare gas into sustainable fuels and chemicals, including methanol, at the source of waste. The company serves hard-to-abate industries including maritime transportation, aviation, agriculture, energy, and waste management. www.emvolon.com
