The collaboration between Downey Ridge Environmental Company, also known as Greasezilla, and bp is setting a new standard for sustainability in the energy sector. On October 1, 2024, the companies announced a strategic and financial agreement that will transform brown grease waste into valuable biofuels. This partnership aims to expand Greasezilla's operations while advancing the renewable diesel (RD) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) markets.
Greasezilla’s innovative technology extracts nearly pure brown grease from grease trap waste, refining it into a feedstock for biofuel. This groundbreaking method provides an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional waste disposal methods, such as incineration or landfilling, which contribute to methane emissions and pollution.
The partnership will facilitate the construction of up to 40 new fats, oils, and grease (FOG) receiving stations across the U.S., with up to $5 million allocated per site. Greasezilla’s proprietary system will be deployed in these locations, making it a key player in the nationwide effort to repurpose waste and reduce its environmental footprint.
One of the key benefits of this collaboration is the diversion of waste from landfills. Greasezilla’s process mitigates landfill overcapacity, which has become a growing issue in the United States. A recent report by the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) noted that rising landfill tipping fees are being driven by overcapacity challenges. By diverting grease trap waste away from landfills, Greasezilla is not only reducing methane emissions but also helping to manage landfill costs.
“Our technology is a game changer,” said RON CROSIER, President of Greasezilla. “Partnering with bp allows us to expand our reach and make a larger impact in reducing waste and transforming it into something useful.”

The agreement between Greasezilla and bp marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy solutions. By combining Greasezilla's technology with bp’s global biofuel production capabilities, the partnership creates a synergy that can significantly impact both companies. Greasezilla will gain access to bp's global distribution network, while bp will benefit from lower carbon feedstocks to meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Nigel Dunn, Senior Vice President of Biofuels Growth at bp, emphasized the importance of this partnership, saying, “Bioenergy is one of bp’s growth engines. This investment aligns with our commitment to increasing biofuel production and supports our goal of a net zero future.”
The financial backing from bp will be instrumental in scaling Greasezilla’s operations, allowing them to integrate more effectively into bp’s global supply chain. In addition to expanding production, future efforts will focus on advancing technology to maximize environmental benefits and further reduce the carbon footprint of biofuel production.
In other words, this partnership is just the beginning. “We’ve found a partner in bp who shares our vision,” said RON CROSIER. “Together, we are advancing Greasezilla’s technology and sustainability goals to create a better, greener future.”
As the world’s largest shipper and distributor of ammonia, bp is in a prime position to leverage Greasezilla’s low-emission feedstocks. This partnership will bolster bp’s ability to supply SAF to meet growing global demand. The use of Greasezilla's waste-to-energy technology is seen as a significant step towards decarbonizing sectors that have been difficult to tackle, such as aviation and shipping.
The ability to repurpose waste into energy aligns perfectly with global sustainability goals. As the partnership progresses, Greasezilla's technology could become a cornerstone in the global transition to cleaner energy.
Greasezilla’s technology goes beyond simple waste management; it actively contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Traditional methods of waste disposal, such as incineration or landfilling, are notorious for releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By diverting waste from landfills and repurposing it into biofuel, Greasezilla is helping to mitigate these harmful emissions.
Furthermore, the technology’s ability to scale means that its environmental benefits will only grow as more facilities come online. Greasezilla’s method of refining brown grease into biofuel feedstock not only reduces waste but also creates a renewable energy source, which is key to achieving long-term sustainability goals.
Looking ahead, the investment from bp is expected to fuel further advancements in Greasezilla’s technology. Future phases of the partnership will focus on expanding production capacity and maximizing the environmental benefits through technological innovation.
Greasezilla’s process is already known for its high yields of biofuel, producing up to 125 gallons per dry metric ton of feedstock. With future developments, this could increase to over 140 gallons of biofuel per dry metric ton, making the process even more efficient and environmentally friendly.
“We believe that integrating bp’s resources with our cutting-edge technology will allow us to achieve something truly transformative,” said RON CROSIER.
This partnership between Greasezilla and bp is more than just a business agreement—it represents a shared commitment to advancing sustainability and creating a more sustainable future. As the demand for renewable energy grows, the importance of innovative waste-to-energy solutions like Greasezilla’s will continue to rise.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Greasezilla and bp is a major step forward in the global effort to reduce waste, lower emissions, and create renewable fuels that can power a cleaner future. As the partnership develops, the world will be watching closely to see how these two industry leaders can drive change and innovation in the renewable energy space.
