Hexagon Purus will provide its Type 4 hydrogen storage cylinders for New Flyer’s next-generation Xcelsior CHARGE FC™ hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit buses. The buses deliver a range of over 370 miles (600 km) per refueling, reinforcing their position as North America’s most advanced hydrogen transit solution. The contract is valued at approximately USD 6.3 million.
Production of the cylinders will take place at Hexagon Purus’ Westminster, Maryland facility. Since 2020, Hexagon Purus has supplied hydrogen cylinders for more than 200 New Flyer hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses.
“New Flyer’s next-generation zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit bus, the Xcelsior CHARGE FC, is North America’s most advanced hydrogen bus and is built on decades of experience and innovation,” said Brad Barnes, Strategic Sourcing Vice President, NFI. “We are thrilled to continue our longstanding partnership with Hexagon Purus and look forward to putting more high-performing hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit buses on the road in North America during 2025.”
“We have built a strong relationship with New Flyer over several years, and we are very happy to continue supporting them in 2025,” said Michael Kleschinski, EVP Mobility & Infrastructure at Hexagon Purus. “There is an increasing demand for zero-emission solutions in public transportation, and New Flyer’s hydrogen fuel cell-electric transit bus offering plays a vital role in decarbonizing public transportation.”
The cylinders will be delivered throughout 2025.
The mobility sector accounts for approximately 20% of annual global carbon emissions. Hydrogen is a critical solution for reducing emissions in “hard-to-abate” sectors like public transportation.
As hydrogen builds momentum globally, over 30 countries have released hydrogen roadmaps. According to the Hydrogen Council, announced hydrogen projects grew by 35% in 2023 to more than 1,400, representing USD 570 billion in investments. By 2050, green hydrogen could supply up to 25% of the world's energy needs.
New Flyer is North America’s leader in heavy-duty transit buses, offering advanced products under the Xcelsior® and Xcelsior CHARGE® brands. The company supports more than 35,000 buses in service, including 8,600 electric and 1,900 zero-emission models.
Hexagon Purus enables zero-emission mobility for a cleaner energy future. The company is a leading provider of hydrogen Type 4 high-pressure cylinders, battery systems, and vehicle integration solutions for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles. Its products are used in light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, maritime, rail, and aerospace applications.
