Enhance Energy’s Origins Carbon Capture Storage Hub near Clive, Alberta, will have the capacity to store as much as 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year, equal to taking 500,000 cars off the road each year, Natural Resources Canada said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Origins CCS Hub is expected to be the largest carbon capture and storage project in Canada and one of the largest CCS facilities in the world,” the ministry said in announcing the project had begun construction. In a statement, Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson reiterated the government’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.

Enhance Energy’s Origins was one of about two dozen proposed carbon-storage hubs selected by Alberta’s government in 2022 to move forward. The province sought to create centralized locations where industrial emitters could inject greenhouse gases underground and cut emissions, including a hub near Cold Lake that would serve as a reservoir for oil sands producers.

The use of carbon capture and storage as a means of cutting emissions was a central part of a broader bargain struck last year between Alberta and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney to gain federal support for the construction of a new oil pipeline to the British Columbia coast.

“The Enhance Energy Hub will help ensure Alberta produces the most responsible oil and gas in the world while creating investment and jobs in rural Alberta,” Brian Jean, Alberta’s energy minister, said in a statement.
