Carbon removal measurement, reporting, and verification (dMRV) platform Mangrove Systems announced the acquisition of operating assets from biochar-focused digital solutions provider Grain Ecosystem.
Biochar is emerging as an increasingly popular carbon removal solution, offering benefits including long-term carbon storage, scalability due to abundant biomass availability, relatively low cost compared to other CDR technologies, and agricultural advantages. Biochar, or biological charcoal, is produced by heating biomass such as forest residue, wood or crop waste in the absence of oxygen, creating a stable form of carbon which, when buried in soil, enables centuries-long carbon sequestration, in addition to improving soil fertility.

Founded in 2022, Grain Ecosystem offers decarbonization tools to accelerate carbon removal projects in the voluntary carbon market, with a focus on waste-to-value solutions like biochar providing a platform connects project developers with investors and equipment manufacturers. The company received early investment from SE Ventures, the venture fund backed by Schneider Electric.
As part of the acquisition, Grain’s operator accounts will join Mangrove’s existing biochar customer base and gain full access to Mangrove’s platform capabilities, including automated data ingestion, AI-assisted carbon accounting, audit-ready reporting, and certification support across compliance and voluntary carbon removal programs.
Ryan J. Letourneau, Co-Founder & CEO of Grain Ecosystem said:
“Grain has built a strong platform and market presence in the biochar sector, and we believe Mangrove is well positioned to carry that work forward. This transaction provides continuity for customers and reflects a strong fit between what Grain built and Mangrove’s long-term platform.”
Mangrove provides dMRV solutions for carbon dioxide removal (CDR), carbon capture & storage (CCS) projects and low carbon fuels. The company said that the transaction will bring Grain’s customer base of biochar operators onto Mangrove’s compliance and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) platform, as part of its continued investment in the biochar and CDR sector. The companies said that the combined customer base represents a significant share of the current operational global biochar market.
Annie Nichols, General Manager of Biochar at Mangrove Systems said:
“Biochar is one of the most promising and fastest-growing segments of the carbon removal market, and this acquisition deepens our commitment to it. We’re proud to welcome Grain’s operators onto our platform and to support them with the MRV infrastructure they need to scale their revenue and impact.”
