Puro.earth Launches Environmental Attributes Registry, Partnering With Industry-Led Initiative To Standardise Regenerative Agriculture Verification

Puro.earth, the world's leading market infrastructure provider for engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR), today announced the launch of its Environmental Attributes Registry, marking a move into the adjacency of environmental attributes and extending its infrastructure into new environmental market pathways. The initial focus will be to track agricultural carbon intensity, with additional environmental attribute verticals to follow in 2027.

Perdue Farms and Arva Intelligence will be the first adopters of the new Registry, bringing science- and data-driven agricultural programs onto a common system of record. The two companies are founding members of an effort to organize institutional market governance around an environmental board of trade, or EBOT, to bring agricultural and supply-chain participants across the sector together around common rules for environmental attribute markets.

As initial adopters, Perdue Farms and Arva Intelligence will deploy environmental attribute certificate programs through Puro.earth’s Registry. This will provide real-world applications for the new registry and help demonstrate how verified agricultural data can be tracked, compared, and used across supply chains.

EBOT forming to bring common standards to regenerative agriculture

This EBOT initiative initially endorsed by Perdue Farms and Arva Intelligence is being established to fill the void of independent market rules and common Environmental Attribute Certificate (EAC) governance, including program measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) standards, technology-driven verification protocols, and market infrastructure, for environmental attributes generated through regenerative agriculture.

The objective is to create a common institution, governed by its members and run by world-class infrastructure partners, to support multiple end-buyer requirements.

Initially, it will support four categories of environmental attributes, with the infrastructure providing scientific rigour, traceability and environmental-attribute ownership for:

  • Scope 3 insetting claims: Agricultural emissions reductions and removals tied to a company's value chain and sourcing activities
  • 45Z verification certificates: Traceability and data controls that support qualification and verification under the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit
  • Voluntary carbon credits: Support for the issuance, allocation and retirement of credits, underpinned by scientific rigour, peer-reviewed methodologies and independent verification
  • Environmental co-benefit claims: Aiming to independently issue, transfer and retire environmental attributes for a range of eligible voluntary or compliance applications

Puro.earth’s new Environmental Attributes Registry initially tracking agricultural CI

Puro.earth’s new Environmental Attributes Registry will be run separately from Puro.earth's CDR offering as a new, distinct adjacency, however still applying its existing registry infrastructure, governance and rigour that underpins it. Agricultural Carbon Intensity (CI) is the first environmental attribute the Registry will track, though this will be readily expandable to other environmental attributes in the future.

Under the initial application, the Registry will connect verified field-level data to auditable environmental attributes, giving buyers, auditors and regulators transparent, verified data relating to origin, ownership, transfer history, retirement status and claim eligibility. The infrastructure is designed to prevent double counting, improve traceability and provide greater confidence in environmental claims across agricultural supply chains.

For tracking agricultural CI, the Registry will leverage MillPont's Environmental Trust Infrastructure (METI) geospatial identity and clearing layer, embedding independent field-level geospatial provenance and program-level cross-checking in every claim and outcome. This will give a single, interoperable, cross-checked record of each acre's CI, so buyers and regulators can rely on a claim before it is transacted, financed or reported.

Puro.earth's role will be to attest that existing third-party methodologies for specific crops and use cases - including those within compliance frameworks - are implemented correctly by suppliers. Over time, it is expected that Puro.earth will develop its own agricultural regenerative methodologies, applying the same independent scientific and industry rigour used in developing its carbon removal methodologies.

Tracking carbon intensity to lower embedded emissions, support healthier soil and create more resilient supply chains

How a crop is grown shapes its impact on emissions, soil health and climate resilience, but that story disappears as commodities move into complex food and agriculture supply chains. The new Registry links each commodity to a verified carbon intensity score at farm and field level - data buyers cannot decarbonise or preferentially source without, given that Scope 3 emissions dominated by on-farm production can account for 80-95% of total emissions and CI varies enormously between producers of the same crop.

Practices that lower a crop's CI — reduced tillage, cover cropping, smarter nutrient management — also build healthier, more climate-resilient soil, so making CI visible and rewardable gives farmers a direct commercial incentive to adopt them. In biofuel production, feedstock CI is largely set on the farm, with lower-CI farming translating directly into a lower-CI fuel.

Regulation is driving demand for institutional-grade verified CI data

Regulatory momentum is pulling in the same direction. The SBTi's FLAG guidance references the need for a robust registry to store environmental attribute certificates; the GHG Protocol's Land Sector and Removal Standard, effective 1 January 2027, requires land-unit-level spatial boundaries and single allocation of each reduction or removal across the value chain; the EU's CSRD mandates Scope 3 reporting; and the US 45Z credit is driving near-term demand for verified clean-fuel CI data. No equivalent registry currently exists for agricultural products.

The Registry is built to support both the regulatory obligations placed on companies and their voluntary action on agricultural carbon intensity, with a single verified record able to serve multiple use cases, compliance frameworks and reporting requirements.

The environmental board of trade is in formation. Its governance model, membership framework, methodology approval process and onboarding timetable will be confirmed as the initiative is further established, and the founding members expect to welcome further producers, buyers and technical partners over the coming weeks and months.
