Puro.earth Passes 2 Million CO2 Removal Certificates as Carbon Removal Issuance Accelerates

Published by Todd Bush on November 3, 2026

Carbon removal registry Puro.earth has issued more than 2 million CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs). Each CORC represents one ton of independently verified engineered carbon removal, and the total covers everything certified since the registry's first issuance in 2019.

The second million took just 19 months, less than a third of the time needed to reach the first. Puro.earth crossed 1 million CORCs in March 2025, and issuance now averages more than 50,000 CORCs a month, roughly four times its six-year historical average.

Issuance Forecast Points Higher

Registry forecasts call for annual issuance to exceed 1 million CORCs in 2026 and reach 1.9 million CORCs in 2027.

That growth has strong backing. Nasdaq, majority owner of Puro.earth since 2021, led an €11 million Series B round in September 2025 to strengthen the platform's supplier certification infrastructure.

When the registry hit its first million in March 2025, its president was already looking ahead.

"The next million is already within reach, and we will continue to ensure that businesses worldwide have access to trusted, verifiable carbon removal credits, at scale," said Jan-Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth.

The United States led issuance at that first milestone, accounting for 45% of all CORCs issued, ahead of Finland, Bolivia and Brazil.

Biochar and Geologic Storage Lead the Mix

Biochar makes up 49% of all CORCs issued to date. Geologically stored carbon follows at 31%, covering bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS).

Carbonated materials account for 4% of issuances. Terrestrial biomass storage makes up 0.8%, and enhanced rock weathering 0.6%.

Every credit in the second million was certified under methodologies requiring physical carbon storage for at least 100 years. The Puro Standard also holds program-level Core Carbon Principles eligibility from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market.

Faster Issuance and Faster Retirement

To handle the higher volumes, Puro.earth upgraded its digital tools. The changes include MyPuro 2.0, automated dMRV API integrations and the Puro Issuance Plus batch processing framework.

Together, these upgrades cut the median time from data submission to credit issuance by 25%.

Buyers are moving faster too. More than 1 million CORCs have been permanently retired in the Puro Registry by over 900 corporate buyer organizations. The average time between issuance and retirement dropped from 325 days in 2019 to 23 days in 2026.

Policy Support Builds Demand

Public-sector procurement programs in Canada, Denmark, Norway and Sweden are adding to demand for durable removals.

In Europe, the EU's Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) certification framework is also shaping the market, alongside the possible future inclusion of permanent removals in the EU Emissions Trading System.

About Puro.earth

Puro.earth is a carbon-crediting platform for durable carbon dioxide removal. Under the Puro Standard, suppliers that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it for at least 100 years are certified and issued CORCs in the public Puro Registry.

Launched in 2019, the company has certified more than 100 engineered carbon removal projects. Its CORCs are bought by companies including Microsoft, Shopify and Zurich Insurance. Nasdaq has been its majority owner since 2021.
