SP Publishes Updated Carbon Reduction & Reporting Guidance with Support of Leading Automotive Suppliers

Published by Todd Bush on December 16, 2022

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) today published an updated version of the guidance document, "Carbon Reduction KPIs, Terms & Definitions," with the additional support of several leading Tier 1 automotive suppliers.

As companies in the automotive industry proactively work toward long-term goals of achieving carbon neutrality, it is expected that suppliers take an active role in striving to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from their businesses as far as possible. The purpose of this document is to provide general industry-supported guidance to help companies in the automotive value chain in establishing a framework for CO2 reporting and reduction aligned with common industry expectations.

Building on prior guidance on this subject published by SP in July of 2021 and May of 2022, the contents of this updated document were generated by a collaborative process among automotive manufacturers and tiered suppliers working through SP including: Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Honda Development and Manufacturing of America LLC, Stellantis, Toyota Motor North America, AGC Automotive Americas, American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc., Autoneum North America Inc., DENSO, Lear Corporation, Magna International Inc., Toyota Tsusho America, Inc., and UGN, Inc.

"There is an urgent need for the automotive industry to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the supply chain. This guidance provides us with a solid foundation on common industry expectations and ways to standardize progress on carbon reduction and reporting. As one of the largest suppliers in the automotive space, Magna has a unique position and an all-encompassing view of the flow of materials and resources. We look forward to further collaboration to raise awareness, educate and lead the charge toward change in this critical area," said Ahmed Elganzouri, Director of Sustainability, Magna International

"This updated guidance is a reflection of SP's efforts to facilitate OEM and supplier dialogue and collaboration on common industry definitions, tools, and resources to support our members in driving progress on carbon reduction up and down the value chain. We commend each of the suppliers that have provided their support to this updated guidance for their leadership and look forward to continuing to work together to elevate best practice around key aspects of supply chain engagement on the path toward carbon neutrality," said Kellen Mahoney, Director, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP).
