The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a new Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), offering up to $46 million to support the advancement of clean-hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

This funding aims to enhance research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of affordable solutions that will play a pivotal role in hydrogen production, infrastructure, and fuel cell performance. These efforts are part of the Biden-Harris administration’s "whole of government" approach to promoting clean energy solutions.
This funding aligns with the broader vision laid out in the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, which outlines a path to achieve a net-zero-carbon future. Hydrogen technologies are seen as critical in decarbonizing sectors such as heavy-duty transportation and industrial processes. Advancing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies can help reduce emissions in areas that are traditionally difficult to decarbonize, contributing to the overall goal of a sustainable and resilient economy.
"These investments will help accelerate the shift towards clean energy while boosting domestic hydrogen production capacity," said an official from DOE. This initiative is part of DOE's long-term plan to solidify the role of hydrogen in the national energy grid, while fostering innovation and job creation across the country.
The funding will cover four main topic areas, each aimed at advancing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in specific applications:
Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Water Splitting Device Scale Up: This research aims to scale up advanced PEC systems for hydrogen production, enhancing their efficiency and feasibility for commercial use.
High-Performance Materials for Hydrogen Service, Including Cryogenic and High-Pressure Conditions: This area focuses on improving the materials used in hydrogen infrastructure, such as pipelines and storage systems, ensuring they can withstand extreme conditions.
Sustainable High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes and Ionomers for Heavy-Duty Transportation Applications: Developing more efficient components for heavy-duty vehicles like trucks and buses will help accelerate the adoption of hydrogen fuel cells in the transportation sector.
Domestic Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Motorcoach Bus Development and Demonstration: This project aims to demonstrate hydrogen fuel cells in a new high-impact application: motorcoach buses. The success of this initiative could lead to further adoption of hydrogen fuel cells in public transportation.
Each of these topics is carefully chosen to address the most pressing technological challenges in hydrogen production and fuel cell use. The focus on heavy-duty transportation and industrial applications is particularly important, as these sectors are harder to decarbonize with other forms of renewable energy.

By funding these projects, DOE aims to support the scaling up of hydrogen technologies across the United States. This funding opportunity is closely tied to the development of Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs), which are designed to create a network of hydrogen production and distribution systems. These hubs are a central part of the DOE’s plan to build a robust hydrogen economy and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
