A Hamburg-based climate tech startup is stepping into the public arena this week, bringing with it a track record of deployed direct air capture (DAC) systems and a fresh nomination for one of Germany's top innovation awards.
Universal Carbon GmbH officially launched this week, coinciding with its selection as a finalist for the 2026 Hamburg Innovation Awards, with winners to be announced on June 18 at the Hamburg Innovation Summit.

The company focuses on building infrastructure for biogenic CO2 and biomethane (RNG) supply chains. Its core argument is straightforward: CO2 that gets emitted today could instead be monetized. Universal Carbon is working to turn stranded carbon and methane streams into what it describes as infrastructure-grade commodities.
Central to this is its proprietary liquid carbon capture (LCC) technology, which the company says unlocks biogenic gas and seawater streams to open pathways for carbon removal, e-fuels, and what it calls the circular carbon economy.
Universal Carbon isn't just launching on paper. The team has already deployed 11 DAC systems across Europe and North America, including what the company claims is the most reliable and efficient plant of its class in Canada.
That Canadian deployment took place at the Deep Sky Alpha facility in Innisfail, Alberta, in November 2025. The system uses a solid amine-based filter to pull CO2 directly from the atmosphere, part of the Airbus DAC technology that Universal Carbon's engineers helped develop and deploy. Deep Sky Alpha, which began operations in August 2025, is designed to serve as a carbon removal innovation and commercialization center, hosting multiple DAC technologies under the same operating conditions for testing and optimization.
The Alberta deployment contributed to Universal Carbon landing its finalist spot at the Hamburg Innovation Awards. Award winners get the chance to pitch on the main stage of the Hamburg Innovation Summit in front of investors, corporates, and ecosystem players.
Founded and headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, Universal Carbon has spent four years developing and deploying DAC and LCC systems before going public with its launch this week. Its LCC technology targets biogenic CO2 and biomethane streams that would otherwise go uncaptured, with the goal of making those streams viable inputs for carbon removal projects, synthetic fuels, and circular economy applications.
Co-founder Leon Ketscher described the company's direction in a statement this week.
Leon Ketscher, Co-Founder, Universal Carbon GmbH: "Our mission is to build the technology and infrastructure needed to make biogenic CO2 and biomethane streams accessible, efficient, and valuable. With our LCC technology, we aim to unlock new pathways for carbon removal, e-fuels, and the circular carbon economy."
The Hamburg Innovation Summit takes place on June 18, 2026 at the Oberhafenquartier in Hamburg, spanning over 1,800 square meters of exhibition space and five stages. It's the largest cross-sector innovation event in Hamburg and the greater metropolitan region, bringing together startups, corporations, investors, and policymakers for a full day of programming. Universal Carbon will be present at the startup area and is scheduled for a keynote on the Local Hero Stage.
