US-based Aternium has completed front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies for the individual elements of its planned hydrogen and heavy water production project at home, advancing development towards construction.

The studies covered the electrolyser set-up and heavy water production process, among other elements, while a preliminary FEED assessment of the overall project has also been completed. A full project-wide FEED study is expected to be finished in the first half of 2027. That is also when the company plans to launch off-site modular construction of its first plant. It said the approach is intended to accelerate deployment and improve construction efficiency.

The initiative aims to establish a domestic US source of heavy water, a critical material supporting advanced energy, scientific research and strategic industrial applications. The US last produced heavy water at the Savannah River Site in 1982, the company noted in the statement.

CH-IV, Siemens Energy and Kiewit Engineering Group contributed to the engineering work.

In August, Aternium announced that it had decided to locate its first commercial heavy water and electrolytic hydrogen production facility in Dover, Delaware. The US start-up also signed a definitive agreement to acquire a site at Garrison Oak Technical Park that was expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
