BioCirc Opens World’s Largest Biogas-Based CCS Facility in Denmark

Published by Todd Bush on June 26, 2026

Danish biogas company BioCirc has opened what it claims is the world's largest carbon capture and storage facility based on biogas, at Vesthimmerland in northern Jutland. The facility is the first of five CCS installations planned across the company's biogas portfolio and marks the launch of BioCirc's full BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) platform.

The Vesthimmerland facility will capture 32,500 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The CO₂ is captured as part of the biogas production process, after which the liquefied gas is shipped to INEOS's Greensand Future CO₂ storage site in the Danish sector of the North Sea, where it is permanently stored deep beneath the seabed. The project is supported by the Danish Energy Agency through the NECCS funding pool.

The four remaining CCS installations will be deployed at Favrskov Biogas, Haderslev Biogas, Grønhøj Biogas and Vinkel Biogas, completing a platform that spans five of BioCirc's eight biogas plants.

Bertel Maigaard, CEO of BioCirc, said the opening represented the first step in the company's broader BECCS rollout. "This is the first of five, and when all facilities are operational, BioCirc will be contributing to the capture and permanent storage of CO₂ from biogas at significant scale," he said, describing BECCS as a strategically important area that allows the company to build on its existing biogas platform and increase its contribution to the energy transition.

BioCirc said the project establishes a complete CCS value chain from decentralised CO₂ capture to offshore storage, and that by developing multiple revenue streams from its biogas operations the company can extend cost-effective carbon displacement with permanent negative emissions. The platform is designed to support decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors including agriculture, shipping and heavy road transport.

The opening ceremony was attended by Bertel Maigaard and Per Bach Laursen, Mayor of Vesthimmerland Municipality.
