Brookfield Asset Management is making its first move into low-carbon fuels in South Asia and the Middle East, committing up to $600 million to ACME Cleantech Ventures, a UK-registered entity within India's ACME Group. Announced September 17, the funds will go toward developing and building green ammonia and green methanol projects in India and Oman.
The investment comes through Brookfield's Brookfield Global Transition Fund strategy, which focuses on net-zero carbon opportunities. It adds a new dimension to Brookfield's existing India footprint, where the firm already holds a portfolio of roughly 50 gigawatts of wind and solar assets in operation and pipeline.

ACME's green molecules business is already operational. ACME GHC runs what it describes as the world's first integrated solar-powered green hydrogen and green ammonia facility, located in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The company is also advancing a commercial-scale green ammonia project in Duqm, Oman, within the country's Special Economic Zone, where construction is underway with production targeted from 2027.
New facilities are being developed in Odisha as well, following a Green Ammonia Purchase Agreement with the Solar Energy Corporation of India. That deal is part of a broader strategy to serve both domestic fertilizer and industrial demand, alongside international buyers seeking low-carbon feedstocks.
ACME has secured a solid set of supply agreements. International partners include Yara International of Norway, Japan's IHI Corporation, and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, with IHI also holding a strategic joint venture stake with ACME. On the domestic side, agreements are in place with Indian fertilizer companies including IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphates, Coromandel International, and Indorama India.
That customer base spans shipping, fertilizers, and industrial decarbonization — the hard-to-abate sectors where green ammonia and methanol are most urgently needed.
Nawal Saini, Managing Partner and Head of Energy, South Asia and the Middle East at Brookfield, said the deal "combines our global scale and institutional capital with ACME's operating capabilities," marking the firm's entry into the region's green molecules sector.
Brookfield manages more than $1 trillion in assets under management globally. The Global Transition Fund is its dedicated vehicle for clean energy and decarbonization investments, and this deal fits squarely within that mandate.
Manoj Upadhyay, Chairman of ACME Group, said the company aims to "accelerate cost-competitive decarbonization and build a global platform" serving customers across Asia, Europe, and beyond, backed by long-term offtake contracts with blue-chip counterparties.
Green ammonia and green methanol are produced using hydrogen generated from renewable energy. Both can displace fossil-fuel-derived alternatives in fertilizers, shipping fuel, and industrial processes, making them critical to decarbonizing sectors that electrification alone can't reach. Demand is expected to grow as governments and corporations tighten emissions commitments.
Brookfield's $600 million commitment signals that large institutional capital is moving from the sidelines into green fuels in a serious way. With an operational facility, projects under construction, and a pipeline of bankable offtake agreements already in place, ACME is among the more advanced green fuels developers in Asia. The Brookfield backing gives the platform the financial scale to deliver on that pipeline.
