Fifteen years ago, we set out to do something that had never been done before: to permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere via Direct Air Capture. As pioneers in carbon removal, we’ve always known this journey would be demanding. Today, we find ourselves navigating a challenging time.
In light of current macroeconomic uncertainty, shifting policy priorities where climate tech is seeing reduced momentum in some areas, and the pending clarity for our next plant in the U.S., Climeworks is proactively adapting its business plan to stay future-oriented.
To ensure Climeworks remains resilient through today’s global challenges and able to lead toward a gigaton-scale future, we are planning to reduce the size of our team. As the best funded scale-up in the industry, we are grateful for the trust of our investors, but we need to be mindful that our funding must be managed with diligence.
We will approach any final decision to reduce positions with the utmost care, taking into account all inputs we are currently collecting from our team. Every Climeworker has contributed to shaping not just our company, but an entire industry. We are deeply grateful for the dedication, creativity, and passion that each team member has brought to this mission.
We are in to win this challenge. We will double down on what we stand for: highest quality carbon removal, taking our core technology to the next level to drive long-term value ensuring we stay the undisputed tech leader and at the forefront of innovation. We want to inspire other startups in the industry to follow suit. At the same time, we are diversifying our holistic portfolio offering to broaden our market impact.
Carbon removal is not a dream, it’s a necessity. A necessity that can make the difference when scaled toward gigaton capacities. We remain focused on the long term. With gratitude and determination, we continue to move forward: humbled by the responsibility we carry and more committed than ever to the future we know is possible.
Sincerely
Christoph Gebald & Jan Wurzbacher
