Hive Hydrogen Selects Game-Changing EU Electrolyser and Ammonia Loop Solution for $5.8Bn Coega Green Ammonia Project

Published by Todd Bush on May 25, 2026

Highlights

  • Coega Green Ammonia to invest over $1bn in Topsoe's dynamic Ammonia Loop and 850 MW integrated Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) technology
  • The Coega Plant will produce over 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year at an FOB price of $650/tonne (CIF price below $700/tonne), with an expected Commercial Operation Date (COD) in 2030
  • Danish Original Equipment Manufacturer Topsoe selected for their state-of-the-art solution, superior efficiency, quality and overall cost savings, strongly supporting the commercialisation of South Africa's Lighthouse Green Ammonia project
  • The Coega Green Ammonia project will be supplied from Topsoe's new SOEC Stack Manufacturing Facility in Herning — inaugurated October 2025 — with an electrolyser production capacity of 500 MW per year

Giles Redpath, CEO and co-owner of Hive Energy, said: "The massive step up in efficiency that Topsoe brings to the Green Hydrogen Industry with its Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Technology to produce Green Ammonia means we can reduce capital expenditure on renewables by over €0.5 billion [$540 million USD]. The Project will also benefit from a 25% reduction in electricity transmission and wheeling costs which reduces overall operating costs substantially and most importantly brings down the selling price of unsubsidised Green Ammonia to one of the lowest globally."

Redpath remarked further: "The Hive Hydrogen Green Ammonia project will also be a game changer in itself, not only producing Green Ammonia at a price that outcompetes Blue Ammonia but also for the tremendously positive impact that the project will have for the Just Energy Transition — creating jobs and helping to uplift communities and people living in poverty in South Africa."

*Project Development Status*

Hive Hydrogen has recently reached some major milestones including completion of the Green Ammonia Plant Environmental Impact Assessment and is in the final stage of project development (Front End Engineering Design). Hive is currently inviting interested parties to participate in this project. The latest Project Information Memorandum — dated 15 May 2026 — is now available to prospective investors and lenders.

Coega Green Ammonia Project Overview

  • Own high-yielding, integrated grid-connected Wind (1,499 MW) and Solar energy (1,430 MWac) renewable energy assets managed for optimal plant utilisation
  • Leveraging newly liberalised and favourable electricity regulations and the South African government's strategic focus on enabling the green hydrogen industry
  • Deploying 850 MW of the most efficient, next-generation green hydrogen production technology — Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) high-temperature electrolysis

About Hive Hydrogen

Hive Hydrogen, backed by Hive Energy and Built Africa, has been working since September 2019 on establishing a large-scale green ammonia plant in South Africa powered by renewable energy to produce 1,000,000 tonnes per year.

The Coega Green Ammonia Project is in its final stage of development and is on track to commence Front End Engineering Design in Q3 2026 and conclude Final Investment Decisions by Q3 2027.

Hive Energy, headquartered in Hampshire, United Kingdom, with offices in 22 countries, has developed more than 3,000 MW of grid-connected solar PV plants across 50+ solar sites and over 40 industrial and commercial solar rooftop sites. Hive Energy has also progressed to final-stage development of their giga-scale green hydrogen project in Spain. Hive Energy is delivering transformational change for a cleaner future — delivering world-class solar and wind projects, helping build the hydrogen economy and smart solutions across the circular economy.

The BuiltAfrica Group, located in Waterfall Point Office Park in Midrand near Johannesburg, was founded in 2008 by Thulani Gcabashe to develop and invest in renewable energy projects. Thulani has held positions as former Chairman of Standard Bank Group (2015–2022), Imperial Holdings Limited (2008–2015), MTN Zakhele Limited (2010–2015), and CEO of Eskom (2000–2007). The Built Africa Group focuses on developing renewable energy projects in South Africa, having successfully participated in the South African government's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP) with two large-scale solar generation plants.
