Baker Hughes is making waves in the energy sector, not just through technology but also by driving decarbonization efforts. As an energy technology company, it provides solutions that enhance energy production while improving efficiency and sustainability.
According to Allison Anderson Book, Chief Sustainability Officer at Baker Hughes, the company is deeply involved in multiple sectors. "We make technology that helps produce energy. It also powers different parts of the world and the energy ecosystem," she explained.
Beyond energy, Baker Hughes also specializes in non-destructive testing and industrial asset management, ensuring efficiency across industries.

At the GreenBiz 25 conference, a key theme was decarbonization. However, achieving sustainability goals is no easy task. Baker Hughes’ customers face challenges due to shifting geopolitical dynamics, which impact return on investment and regulatory compliance. Many major energy producers must navigate complex regulatory landscapes, often balancing corporate sustainability reporting requirements with actual emissions reduction efforts.
"The shift of capital from the abatement solution has gone into reporting, and now we're trying to think about how we can advise our customers on how to report and still spend on the abatement solution itself," Book noted.

Baker Hughes believes collaboration is key to scaling sustainable solutions. Every year, the company holds an annual convening that brings together leaders from various industries to share ideas and push for change. This year’s theme, Progress at Scale, emphasized the impact of collective action.
A major step in this direction was the launch of sustainability advisory services through GaffneyCline Energy Advisory. This initiative focuses on water and energy resource management, helping customers optimize operations while staying compliant with evolving environmental regulations.
"When we convene people at our annual meeting, we're looking to catalyze collective buying power and interest in sustainable energy development," said Book. This strategy ensures that decarbonization efforts are practical, scalable, and widely adopted.
As 2025 unfolds, Baker Hughes is doubling down on its sustainability commitments. Book emphasized that sustainability is not just good for the planet—it’s good for business.
"You actually save and make more money, right? We kind of get a little hung up on what things are going to cost more. Is this going to add to the top of the pile within our company today? We have not invested anything above what we would have already spent for upgrades, and we have a three-year Break Even period, and it pays off," she explained.
The company remains focused on its long-term goals, ensuring that progress at scale translates into tangible benefits for businesses and communities alike.
The key takeaway?
"Sustainability is actually a core part of being a responsible business person."
