Mitsubishi Power Americas, through its subsidiary MHI Hydrogen Infrastructure (MHI H2I), is set to provide industry-leading hydrogen technology and expertise as part of the development of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNWH2 Hub). The PNWH2 Hub will deliver hydrogen solutions that advance the nation's clean energy goals, driving benefits for communities through clean energy investments, well-paying jobs, and enhanced energy security.
The PNWH2 Hub will address some of the hardest sectors to decarbonize, such as heavy-duty transport, fertilizer production, and dispatchable peak power generation.

Mitsubishi Power Americas announced the recent signing of a subrecipient agreement between the PNWH2 Hub and MHI H2I’s Boardman Hydrogen Hub project. This milestone advances PNWH2’s objectives and the deployment of clean hydrogen infrastructure in the region. The PNWH2 Hub is one of seven regional hydrogen hubs supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) H2Hubs Program, which is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The agreement marks the formalization of nearly two years of collaboration, further enabling MHI H2I’s project development efforts and allowing access to federal funding from the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). MHI H2I plans to leverage Mitsubishi Power Americas' hydrogen technology to advance the hub’s development and align with the DOE’s clean energy objectives.
The PNWH2 Hub includes eight project groups, or nodes, spanning Washington, Oregon, and Montana. These nodes aim to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy-duty transportation, port operations, fertilizer and cement production, and power generation.
Node 6, led by MHI H2I in partnership with Portland General Electric and Williams, focuses on hydrogen production for clean dispatchable electricity generation. It also supports liquefaction and delivery for heavy-duty transportation through Node 3. Node 6 features hydrogen production via electrolysis, 100% hydrogen-capable turbines, and a hydrogen pipeline for long-duration energy storage.
“This important step solidifies our position in the PNWH2 Hub and underscores our strong commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy in the U.S.,” said Scott Neumeister, Director of Regional Business Development, MHI Hydrogen Infrastructure. “The Pacific Northwest is poised to serve as a national benchmark for successful low-carbon intensity and economically viable green hydrogen production.”
“Our dedicated group of partners form the backbone of PNWH2’s work to accelerate the investment in and deployment of clean hydrogen technologies,” said Chris Green, President of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association. “Formalizing our project subrecipient agreements marks a significant step in laying the groundwork for the hub’s development.”
According to the OCED, the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program aims to jumpstart a new clean energy economy in the United States by creating H2Hubs nationwide. The H2Hubs will serve as a foundation for a national hydrogen network while supporting clean hydrogen production, storage, delivery, and end-use. The program also focuses on enabling diverse, domestic energy pathways, creating well-paying jobs, and improving energy security.
Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. employs more than 2,000 power generation, energy storage, and digital solutions professionals. The company offers a range of power generation solutions, including gas and steam turbines, geothermal systems, and energy storage solutions such as green hydrogen and battery systems. Mitsubishi Power Americas is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., one of the world’s leading heavy machinery manufacturers.
MHI Hydrogen Infrastructure (MHI H2I) develops clean hydrogen production, storage, and delivery infrastructure to ensure renewable energy availability across hard-to-decarbonize sectors. MHI H2I is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Power Americas and supports decarbonization through robust hydrogen ecosystem development.
