Summit Carbon Solutions Hires New CEO, Continues Push for CO2 Pipeline

Summit Carbon Solutions has appointed industry veteran Joe Griffin as its new CEO, as the company continues to seek approval for a $9 billion carbon capture pipeline project spanning five states, The Des Moines Register reported.
Summit said in an email Wednesday, Aug. 6, that Joe Griffin brings almost 40 years of experience delivering complex infrastructure projects in the natural gas industry.
The company is seeking approval to build a 2,500-mile carbon-capture pipeline across Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. The pipeline would capture COâ emissions from nearly 60 ethanol plants, with underground sequestration planned in North Dakota. Summit still needs a permit to build in South Dakota, where the request has been rejected twice.

Opponents have been working to block the project since its 2021 announcement, citing safety, property rights, and potential agricultural land damage. Two other companies have dropped similar carbon capture pipeline projects due to opposition and regulatory challenges.
New CEO Joe Griffin has sent letters to Iowa landowners in an effort to gain necessary approvals. Griffin previously served as CEO and co-founder of Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Intensity Infrastructure Partners, founded in 2023 to develop and build pipelines. He was CEO of Sendero Midstream Partners from about 2021 to 2022, when it was sold.
Before joining Summit, Griffin founded or led several energy companies over the past 20 years, including Hiland Partners LP, owned by oil and gas billionaire Harold Hamm, who is also an investor in Summit Carbon Solutions.
