Project Concho in Texas is taking carbon capture to the next level, aiming to remove over 45,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually with plans to expand to 450,000 tonnes.
Powered entirely by wind energy, this direct air capture (DAC) hub combines cutting-edge technology with onsite geological storage to secure a permanent solution to atmospheric CO₂.
The project, developed by Return Carbon and Verified Carbon, is designed to address not just current emissions but also the CO₂ already in the atmosphere.
This dual approach highlights the importance of combining emission reductions with innovative carbon removal technologies.

Project Concho aims to remove more than 45,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year
Situated in Texas, Project Concho leverages renewable wind energy to power its DAC operations.
This approach reduces reliance on fossil fuels, cutting CO₂ emissions from energy generation by up to 90% compared to traditional DAC facilities.
Robert Little, gTech Sustainability Strategy Lead at Google, explains: “By utilizing wind power, Project Concho reduces reliance on fossil fuels, potentially decreasing CO₂ emissions significantly. As we scale up DAC technologies, integrating renewable energy sources like wind power will be crucial for maximizing effectiveness and minimizing environmental impact.”
This integration demonstrates how renewable energy can enhance the efficiency and sustainability of large-scale carbon removal projects, setting a standard for future initiatives.
Return Carbon, based in Amsterdam, and Verified Carbon, a Texas-based company born out of the University of Texas at Austin, are the driving forces behind Project Concho.
Their joint mission focuses on scaling sustainable carbon removal technologies through impactful infrastructure projects.
Martijn Verwoerd, Managing Director of Return Carbon, says: “Project Concho is a significant step forward in scaling up DAC. This opportunity aligns perfectly with our mission to mitigate climate change through scalable commercialization of new technologies.”
The project is not just a win for the environment but also for West Texas, creating economic opportunities and positioning the region as a hub for carbon removal innovation.
