$415 Million Solar Project to Power the World’s Largest Direct Air Capture Facility

Published by Todd Bush on January 16, 2025

Renewable energy is transforming how we address carbon emissions, and solar power is at the forefront of this movement.

As demand for sustainable energy solutions grows, technologies like Direct Air Capture (DAC) are becoming critical tools for reducing atmospheric CO₂.

A prime example of this innovation is Origis Energy’s $415 million Swift Air Solar project.

The Swift Air Solar Project: A Game Changer in Clean Energy

Origis Energy’s Swift Air Solar project, located in Ector County, Texas, will provide solar power to STRATOS, the world’s first large-scale DAC plant.

This facility, developed by Occidental and its subsidiary 1PointFive, is a groundbreaking effort in the fight against climate change.

Funded by Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) and Advantage Capital, the $415 million project includes $290 million in construction and term debt financing and $125 million in tax equity funding.

Once operational in mid-2025, Swift Air Solar will supply zero-emission energy to STRATOS, enabling it to capture up to 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

“This is an exciting project, helping to power the world’s first large-scale direct air capture plant,” said Vikas Anand, CEO of Origis Energy. “A big thank you to Natixis CIB and Advantage Capital for their partnership.”STRATOS will store captured CO₂ in saline formations, creating carbon removal credits for businesses. This aligns with global goals for sustainable carbon removal and decarbonization.

Solar and Direct Air Capture: A Powerful Partnership

Direct Air Capture is designed to remove CO₂ directly from the atmosphere. Its effectiveness, however, relies on renewable energy sources like solar to minimize environmental impact.

By integrating solar power with DAC, the STRATOS facility can operate efficiently while reducing its carbon footprint.

The synergy between solar energy and DAC extends beyond environmental benefits. Solar power, with its scalability and cost-effectiveness, complements the energy-intensive requirements of DAC systems.

Flexible DAC units, capable of adapting to variable solar power output, maximize energy efficiency and continuous carbon capture.

Economic Benefits of Solar-Powered DAC

The integration of solar power and DAC technology isn’t just environmentally impactful—it’s also economically promising.

Research indicates that pairing DAC with solar curtailment can significantly reduce operational costs. These modular DAC systems adjust dynamically to energy availability, optimizing resource use.

Carbon pricing further boosts the financial viability of solar-powered DAC. As carbon prices rise and DAC component costs decrease, these systems become increasingly attractive for large-scale deployment.

By 2030, solar-powered DAC could account for 15% of global emission reduction goals, accelerating progress toward net-zero emissions by 2040.

Financing Renewable Innovation: Partnerships Driving Progress

The Swift Air Solar project showcases the critical role of collaboration in advancing renewable energy.

Natixis CIB’s leadership as green loan coordinator and Advantage Capital’s investment highlight the importance of financial institutions in supporting innovative solutions.

“This financing reinforces our commitment to renewable energy solutions that drive the global energy transition,” said Nasir Khan, Managing Director at Natixis CIB. Similarly, Rom Bitting, Managing Director at Advantage Capital, emphasized their focus on fostering both economic growth and environmental impact through this collaboration.

SolarBank: Expanding Renewable Energy Horizons

While Origis Energy’s Swift Air Solar project leads the charge in solar-powered DAC, other companies like SolarBank are pushing the boundaries of renewable energy.

SolarBank has developed over 250 MW of solar projects in North America since 2017, focusing on commercial, industrial, and community solar solutions.

SolarBank’s expansion into energy storage and electric vehicle charging further illustrates the versatility and potential of solar technology.

As part of IESO’s Long-Term Request for Proposals, the company is helping to deliver 4,000 MW of dispatchable electricity capacity, driving America’s clean energy transition.

Looking Forward: The Future of Solar and DAC

The combination of solar power and DAC technology offers a promising path toward achieving global climate goals.

By leveraging solar energy’s scalability and cost-effectiveness, alongside DAC’s capacity for direct CO₂ removal, we can make meaningful progress in combating climate change.

Projects like Swift Air Solar demonstrate how innovation and collaboration can drive transformative solutions.

As Origis Energy and its partners continue to lead in renewable energy, they pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
