Programs Targeting Carbon Capture and Direct Air Capture (DAC)

The funding is divided between two major programs:

  1. Regional DAC Hubs
  2. Carbon Capture Demonstration and Large-Scale Pilots

Each program focuses on addressing critical challenges in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), with an overarching goal of achieving greater carbon reduction and supporting technology readiness.

Key Funding Deadlines

  • Regional DAC Hubs: Letters of intent and concept papers are due by January 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
  • Carbon Capture Demonstration and Pilots: Concept papers must be submitted by March 1, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Regional DAC Hubs Program

The Regional DAC Hubs initiative seeks to establish up to four hubs capable of capturing at least 1 million metric tons of CO₂ annually.

These hubs will integrate DAC technologies with sequestration or utilization strategies to reduce atmospheric carbon effectively.

Funding Details

Topic Area Maximum Award Size Number of Awards Cost Share Period of Performance
Infrastructure Access Platforms $250 million 1-3 At least 50% 10 years
Mid-Scale Commercial DAC Facilities $50 million 4-8 At least 50% 10 years
Large-Scale Commercial DAC Facilities $600 million 2-6 At least 50% 10 years

Carbon Capture Demonstration and Large-Scale Pilots

This program emphasizes advancing CCUS technologies for power generation and industrial applications.

By addressing technical and economic barriers, the initiative aims to scale up carbon management solutions.

CCUS Demonstration $175-400 million $750 million 1-3 At least 50% >7 8-10 years
Large-Scale Pilots $75-135 million $450 million 1-5 At least 30% 5-6 8-10 years
Networked Demonstration Commercialization $20-30 million $100 million 1-3 At least 50% 7 8-10 years

A Path Toward Sustainable Carbon Management

Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Foresight Canada, commented on the importance of initiatives like these, saying, “Cleantech is driving the future of business and productivity, showcasing how innovation and determination can set an inspiring example for global impact.

The programs are expected to boost confidence in the carbon management sector by offering substantial support for technological development and commercialization.

These initiatives not only aim to meet domestic carbon reduction goals but also position the U.S. as a leader in global carbon management efforts.

What’s Next for Applicants?

With deadlines rapidly approaching, potential applicants should prioritize preparing their submissions to align with the DOE’s specific requirements.

The emphasis on innovation, scalability, and environmental performance makes this funding opportunity a pivotal moment for the carbon management industry.
