This Saskatchewan Well Just Made Hydrogen History

Published by Todd Bush on January 17, 2026

Something remarkable just happened beneath the quiet farmlands of central Saskatchewan. MAX Power Mining Corp. has confirmed what many in the energy sector have been waiting for: Canada's first verified natural hydrogen system through dedicated drilling.

The Lawson well, located near Central Butte about 140 km south of Saskatoon, delivered hydrogen concentrations up to 286,000 ppm (28.6% H₂). Three independent laboratories confirmed these results, marking a major turning point for natural hydrogen exploration in North America.

What Makes This Discovery Different

Unlike green or blue hydrogen, which require energy-intensive production methods, natural hydrogen forms deep underground through geological processes. It sits there waiting to be tapped, much like oil or natural gas. This means lower production costs, minimal carbon footprint, and no need for massive electrolyzer facilities.

Sometimes called "white hydrogen" or "gold hydrogen," this naturally occurring resource has generated growing excitement in energy circles. Recent discoveries in France, Mali, and Australia have shown that substantial hydrogen deposits exist around the world.

The Lawson well wasn't just a lucky strike. MAX Power's geological team developed a working model for hydrogen accumulations along the Genesis Trend, a 475-km belt stretching from Saskatchewan into Montana and the Dakotas. The discovery validates that approach and suggests the findings could be repeatable across the entire trend.

Ran Narayanasamy

"This is a defining moment for MAX Power, Saskatchewan and Canada. Lawson is no longer a concept, it's a discovered geological system with gas flow, pressure, and the key ingredients required for future commercial Natural Hydrogen development."

Key Discovery Highlights

lawson well results infographic summary

The Lawson Well Results infographic presents key findings, including confirmed hydrogen concentrations between 16.8% and 28.6% and elevated helium values up to 8.7%, indicating a potential stacked gas system. The results also show free gas flow to the surface with strong initial rates and pressures, as well as a clean gas composition that is an approximately 90% hydrogen-nitrogen mix with no hydrogen sulphide.

Why Saskatchewan

The province has positioned itself as an early leader in this emerging sector. Saskatchewan already boasts Canada's most advanced policy framework for natural hydrogen and has a track record as a global leader in uranium, potash, and helium production.

The Genesis Trend sits adjacent to the Regina-Moose Jaw Industrial Corridor, where hydrogen demand is already strong. Its eastern boundary runs along the Prairie Evaporite formation, which acts as a natural "salt barrier" that traps hydrogen underground.

There's also a bonus: the elevated helium values detected at Lawson suggest a stacked gas system. Helium is in high demand for medical imaging and semiconductor manufacturing. Co-producing both gases could significantly improve project economics.

Steve Halabura

"From a geological perspective, Lawson has delivered exactly what we hoped to see: hydrogen-rich gas, reservoir characteristics, fracture networks, and evidence of a working system."

What Comes Next

MAX Power is wasting no time. The company has outlined an aggressive timeline for the first half of 2026:

  1. Resource modeling will begin shortly, using the extensive dataset collected from Lawson.
  2. A 47-sq. km 3D seismic survey is planned for February to define reservoir geometry.
  3. A confirmatory well will follow to evaluate commercial deliverability.
  4. The company will engage with industrial users and companies specializing in AI infrastructure.

The Bigger Picture

This isn't just about one well. MAX Power holds 1.3 million acres under permit in Saskatchewan, with another 5.7 million acres under application. The success at Lawson de-risks multiple similar targets across the company's entire land package.

The company developed six distinct "play concepts" for natural hydrogen exploration. Lawson tested the first one. A second well is already planned along the Saskatchewan-Montana border to test another play concept in the coming months.

As natural hydrogen exploration gains momentum worldwide, from France to Australia, this Canadian discovery adds North America firmly to the map. The Genesis Trend's extension into Montana and the Dakotas opens up cross-border possibilities for U.S. exploration as well.

A New Chapter for Clean Energy

For years, the hydrogen conversation has centered on production methods: green hydrogen from electrolysis, blue hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture. Natural hydrogen offers a third path that requires neither large amounts of electricity nor fossil fuel inputs.

If the Lawson results can be replicated across the Genesis Trend, Saskatchewan could become a major supplier of clean hydrogen to North American markets. For an industry searching for cost-effective, low-emission hydrogen sources, the prairies just delivered a promising answer.
